Cities have the capacity of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody. —Jane Jacobs

We all know that we live in a world of excess—a glut of images, products, disposable fashion, endless choices for entertainment, and infinite means of escape. With limitless options available for connectivity, it’s odd how alone one can feel, and how important it is to have a sense of real connectedness. It seems to take more effort to maintain community and more careful work to find the points at which we truly overlap. What we’ve learned amidst the expanding visual field, in particular, is that feeling seen and valued—a part of something larger than oneself—is essential not just for happiness, but for survival.

It is with this spirit of shared community that XXS brings together artists from the US and abroad in an intuitive visual dialog. If an exhibition can be thought of as a city of ideas, then connections may arise through color and scale and, after longer contemplation, through content and shared experience. When works are hung salon-style, they naturally build on each other, like a town composed of images, palettes, and forms. The spaces in between become architecture. There is no intended hierarchy, just a visual flow of voices—separate but leaning on and enhanced by each other.

If art stands as a record of its making (and its maker) then it truly comes alive through physical proximity to other works, and hopefully in the minds of like-minded observers. More togetherness, more proximity, more shared ideas. In this case, more is more!
